I'm curious how people found this message board. Whether it was through Stargate Central or a search engine (please say which one) or somewhere else. I'm curious where all you might find a link to this board.

Thanks!

Check your meta tags, and also check to see if your server is blocking spiders. That is how google finds sites.

Also you can submit your site to google as well.

cb49747
08-08-2006, 01:07 PM
I bet you are not allowing spiders. I googled sg1stargate and I did see one page of your site come up, however two links below yours is my family site which has a link to yours, hence it came up.

Colonel Carter
08-08-2006, 08:06 PM
If you type in the words "Stargate Central" my site is the first to show up with the name "Stargate SG-1." I did submit it to Google. But most people aren't likely to type in "Stargate Central" in a google search engine to try and find Stargate sites.

Maybe if you go to my index page and click to view the page source and see what my meta tags look like, you can offer some suggestions?

Howdy! I'm new here...and I found this site on the Stargate Information Archive toplist site. I usually don't pay attention to forum sites (have you SEEN some of those place? Try reading with the colors they've chosen...or try to navigate...or heck, just try to make sense of them!!) I watched this one rise on the list and decided it was worth checking out. Never thought I'd ever join another one (I joined ONE...posted twice...I was sooooooooooooo confused...:huh1:) Anyway, I already like it here! *grin*

I couldn't 'talk' NIN...I do know there are several of their songs I like. I like all types of music, have a very eclectic colletion. I'd have to say that Aerosmith and AC/DC are favorites...and ZZ top...and Joan Jett...and Heart...and Randy Travis...and Alan Jackson...and George Benson...and Eric Clapton...and Shostakovich...and Tschaikowsky (yeah, I like the Russain composers *grin*)

I suppose, though, that's more music than rock

Oh, rocking chairs are the best! I was up all last night...it was Thursday night, "chat night" for my Aussie friend and I, since she has Fridays off. With the time difference, her day is my night, but I can sleep the next day, thank goodness!

Then you live near where I grew up. I was born in Coffeeville (SE corner), grew up in Great Bend.

Colonel Carter

I think Coffeeville is closer to 200 miles away from Greensburg to the southeast. Great Bend however is more like 50 miles away from Greenburg to the northeast. I don't think I know anyone in Greensburg, but I do know people who live in towns in that general vacintiy. I do have a friend though who knows a family whose house was destroyed in Greensburg. President Bush visited there this week. He flew into Wichita on Air Force One, then took a helicopter out to the town. I saw some of the photos of him there, I thought it was touching.

Wow, Aerosmith is also one of my favs. My collection is quite a sight as well. I took a music class several terms ago. Kept my 4 CD of classical composers from that class. Love them.....

My current favs are Maroon 5, Faith Hill, Josh Groban, Nelly Furtado and Evanescence.

All time favs, Aerosmith, Madonna, John Michael Montgomery, Run DMC, so many........I love music.

To me, that the President of the US would show up like that proves he cares about the people of this country. I don't agree with everything he has done, or wants to do, but he's the first president I have respected since Reagan! Yeah, Greensburg is fairly close to Great Bend, if memory serves. I'll take the earthquakes here in the NW...you KNOW what's going to happen with a quake...the ground shakes, rolls or rocks. With a tornado, no rules, baby!

Of your current faves, I recognize one...Faith Hill...have a couple of her CD. I like JMM also...Hubby is into Madonna...I never did like her. She can't sing worth a ****, so she HAS to put on a good show! *grin* I think ppl who have a wide variety of likes when it comes to music get so much more from it. I suppose that could be said for any artform. Although I'll admit that I'm pretty staid when it comes to reading. Tom Clancy...Jane Auel...Piers Anthony...Isaac Asimov (the Father of Sci-fi!)...Robert Silverburg...Christopher Pike...there are others that I've read, but I prefer sci-fi/fantasy. Christopher Pike is more along the lines of horror...only not 'in your face' with it. Lots of twists and turns. I've never been a fan of that genre, but my DIL gave me one of his books to read, I liked it so much she bought me a copy of it!

I had no idea you were in the NW. My hubby is from the NW and we moved here from Washington last summer. They don't really get many earthquakes anyway. Okay, let me rephrase that. We were on the western side of the state and in the 4 years we were there, we only got a handful and of those I think I only felt 1 of them.

I have no idea if you know where Whidbey Island is, but that's where I'm at. Actually, we get several quakes a week up here...but rarely ever feel them. The one that hit in...um...I'm thinking '02 or'03...DEFINITELY felt that one. So where are you located now?

05-12-2007, 10:46 AM
I'm in VA now. We lived in Lakewood and Lacey over the course of 4 years. I was not a happy camper about living in Lakewood, but we survived.

Hubby has family all over the state.

I didn't realize Whidbey got so many quakes. I know where it's at, but we never went out there.

I'm originally from CA and got to feel more than my fair share growing up there.

I'll take tornados over earthquakes any day. In fact, I had this discussion with some friends the other day and they were all saying the same thing, they'd rather face tornados than earthquakes. Because in a tornado, you know you can go somewhere to escape it. With a tornado, there's nowhere to go.

Anissa T
05-12-2007, 12:56 PM
Yeah, but atleast most buildings are now built according to earthquake codes. Less potential for damage. Meanwhile, tornados come whipping through ripping your house of the foundation.

I think the biggest earthquake I've been through was a 6.3. Despite things falling off the wall and it woke me out of my slumber, I felt no need to get out of my bed. Although, my mother called and chastised me for not getting up. :thanx:

Colonel Carter
05-12-2007, 04:37 PM
Well some of these friends who said they'd rather deal with a tornado than an earthquake have experienced earthquakes. You can build houses to resist tornado damage. However, if you get a strong enough earthquake or tornado, it doesn't matter how strong you built it, in fact, there are structures that will survive the worst tornado (the grain elevator in Greensburg is still standing) but if a violent enough earthquake were to erupt directly below it, it could flatten the building.

Tornados are random and rare, I've lived in tornado alley my whole life and have never seen a tornado with my own eyes and only a couple instances in my lifetime of tornados tearing down houses in my area. They aren't that common. But earthquakes are more common and you can't outrun them like a tornado and you can't seek shelter like a tornado.

Tornados don't scare me really, earthquakes do.

Anissa T
05-12-2007, 05:52 PM
I guess it's just what your use too. I find most earthquakes are benign, with the exception of the 89 quake in Oakland/San Francisco. Happened on my birthday and had two uncles up there as well.

Quakes elsewhere tend to be more damaging especially in Japan where they are so much bigger and in countries who don't build earthquake coded facilities.

I know Lakewood...well, where it is...*grin* We came out here when Hubby was in the Navy, many years ago, fell in love with it, and stayed.

The entire Cascade region has quakes daily...this is a cool place to check it out:

http://www.geophys.washington.edu/recenteqs/

I look at it this way, as long as things are shaking a bit, then pressure isn't building up. The day I check that map and there isn't any activity, I'm heading inland...won't stop till I hit the Mississippi River! *grin*

Haven't seen too many houses that can stand up to a tornado when it comes through...when I was growing up my folks had a place...we were supposed to move in that weekend. Friday night a tornado came through...the only thing left was the floor...and it was in sad shape. Only thing STANDING was the toilet. Looked odd as heck! I've seen them, up close and personal, and the damage they're capable of is mindboggling. I've been through a couple of strong quakes as well. I'll take the quake anyday. I KNOW that there are places where I can be protected from falling debris. There are no such assurances with a tornado. My dad, who was born and raised in Kansas as well, once saw what was left of some hay that had been in one of the feed bins, SHOVED THROUGH an oak tree. He said the tree looked like a porcupine! That, my friend, is some power! Tornados aren't so rare, actually, at least they weren't around Great Bend, where I grew up. We could count on at least three a season, on the ground and causing damage!

As for outrunning a tornado...ONLY if it doesn't change directions, and I've seen that happen! I dunno...I guess it's all a matter of perspective, and what you're most comfortable with. Those of us who have experienced them have a healthy respect of them...and no desire to EVER have to deal with one again. To me, a quake is NOTHING in comparison. I'm not saying that I wasn't a bit nervous when the quake that hit in '01 (or '03, I can't remember for certain! LOL!)...90 seconds of the ground actually rolling underfoot. A very loooooooooooooooooong 90 seconds. But the only thing that happened was the shampoo bottles fell into the bathtub. Dishes rattled in the china cabinet a bit, but nothing even chipped.

If I have to choose between the two, I'll take a quake! :helm:

You try to outrun a tornado if you have plenty of warning. You basically head away from the tail end of the storm systerm since that's where tornados typically happen, and only if you have daylight in which you can see a tornado. No one should have tried to outtrun the one in Greensburg because it was at night, thus there was no way to know.

I read the other day that a police officer who was seriously injured in the tornado died. He was in his patrol car trying to warn people when the tornado picked his car up. In the article I read it said he was on the phone with someone, I think his adult daughter but I'm not sure, and was talking to her saying he didn't know where he was and a few things and then the last thing he said on the phone before it went dead was, "I'm screwed." That's freaky.

Yeah, warning is always a good thing! Growing up in tornado alley, I learned young how/when/where to run! Until I got old enough to be 'fatalistic' about it. Then I figured if it was my time, so be it.

That couldn't be an easy thing to live with, actually. Sort of a mixed blessing...being able to talk to him, but then knowning pretty much when the end was. Probably a lot like the folks who received those 'goodbye' phone calls on 9/11.
