View Full Version : Combat Service

I find it very interesting (and it was probably done on purpose) that women in the US can only serve in a limited capacity in combat rolls or even combat support rolls (positions). I mean, as of lately a lot of women end up in combat, but it's not because they serve in a combat position. They are serving combat support positions that end up in combat. Does that make sense?
But, COL Carter has always been in a combat roll throughout SG1.:jaffa
Think it just worked out that way or do you think someone was trying to make a statement?

i think they just wanted a kick butt woman on the team

I think it was a bit of both.
Sex sells.. and Amanda Tapping is easy on the eyes (plus a good actress, so yay). I also don't think the writers would have gotten away with an all male team (just like they also needed someone not Caucasion on the team too).
I think Amanda Tapping brought in her own strength to the show. The sex-organ line in the first episode was one she actually didn't like. She thought it was too feminist, which is interesting to note. Which implies that, at the very least, the writers wanted a strong female co-lead to begin with.

I think the writers meant it to be that way. There has always been the debate whether or not women should be in combat and having been in the military myself, I can see both the pros and cons of the situation.
Although, working with the Stargate program would present its own set of situations that tend to be different than other warlike/combat situations. From a military standpoint, outside of thinking she should have been promoted more often in 10 years (although, I'll readily admit, I'm not sure how the Airforce promotion system works), I think AT has represented her character well as a soldier and has proved a woman can excel in combat situations.

"I think AT has represented her character well as a soldier and has proved a woman can excel in combat situations."
She proved a woman can excel in SCRIPTED combat situations. I'm not saying a woman can't handle her own in combat. But don't judge by a show that is carefully scripted, using stunt doubles for the action scenes. As realistic as Stargate can be, it's still 'make believe'. Real war is unpredictable, dirty, nasty and cruel. And sadly, often necessary to protect ourselves.

I was mostly referencing the show. So, yeah, I totally get it. Cause I even catch myself going "that would never happen in real life". LOL! But, your right, real war or even just training situatons could be totally different.

And in real life you would not come out of a major battle and/or staying up at all hours to save the world and have your hair and make up look perfect. LOL!

Do you mean physically strong? Because that is not the only reason for being in the SGC. I would venture to say it's more of an issue with the military being a male dominated field. JMHO!
And yes, there was a woman on Wormhole X-treme.

Some Women are as physically strong as most men...I am one of them. So that theory does not float a boat in my books.
As for the "or as good" part no were better. in almost all senses of the word.
But most of the time they are shamed by the men....After all this is a male dominated world. Women are just smart enough to bide there time and keep a low profile.
There is that woman who is suppose to represent Carter on Wormmhole X-treme. So yeah.

May I ask why you think that? Specifically. The reason being is I spent several long years in the US Army and sometimes did many more things than the men in my unit. There are many women out there who posses the ability to do many more things then men, both mentally and physically. Not saying all women are like that, but I know some serious warriors. You just never hear about it because the military is a male dominated field.
When we talk about saving the earth from an alien attack, the likelyhood is it isn't going to be hand to hand combat (at first). So, assuming we use a bomb or fighter jets or some such thing, women possess "equal" ability to do that job. Furthermore, when the time comes for hand to hand combat, you'd be a little suprised how far a little street skills, military training and adrenaline will go.
I don't know about the Australian military, but the US military not only have female commanders, but they specifically have female commanders in combat positions. If they were not capable, they would not be in command.

What did you expect when you tell a female dominated site that they are not as capable as men?

yeah there are more females then males in command on this site

I think she was refering to the members of our site cM.
But I think it says a lot for our illustious leader Jack, to premote two females into command positions...but he did not give it too us because we were female...but because we earned the positions.
We both have good strong personalities...in our own separate ways. Military background for NF and growing up in the rural areas of Canada and practicing at a Rifle Range. I was/am a major Tomboy, fixing cars and helping to build Sawmills etc.
So, I think we both use our backgrounds to our own advantages. :yea:
Hey, I very much respect NF:helm:...she had the guts to enter the military :go: where I was not able too. And just coz I am the one who does most of the butt kickin' :r1 :j4 XDXDXD around here does not mean NF cannot and she has. :tla2
So, Wana_be, I think you have lost your argument. XDXDXDXDXDXD
Be a Wraith fine, but just chill everything is cool, calm and collected for the most part around here. :ca: Just enjoy your time here.
Ok? Ok...XD

Ronny Cox (Sen. Kinsey) made the observation that the majority of Stargate SG1 fans seem to be women, simply because the show is dialogue driven...that is, it's a very intellectual show, as opposed to shows that depend on a lot of fighting and explosions to fill up time (because neither ever expand the story plot!). So it's not surprising that the fandom leans heavily toward women.
Another observation that Mr. Cox made was that Stargate fans are for the most part very intelligent...that the men and women who call themselves fans of the show are well read and 'delightful conversationalists'. Apparently he thoroughly enjoys his time at the conventions, as he's able to interact with the fans.
