You know, if you put an S at the beginning of Amanda's name, you'd have Samanda. Shorten that and you'd have Sam. Amanda and Samantha have the same number of syllables and the first vowel is A. Take the S away from the character name and you'd have Amantha. Very similar to Amanda.
