View Full Version : Why'd he join the military?

Does anyone else wonder why John decided to join the military. He just doesn't seem they type to me. He seems not to like authority very much, especially if they stand in his way, he's more of a loner than a team player unless he's leading the team, and he just doesn't seem to have the qualities you would think of for someone in his position.
Thoughts...
It's a family thing - maybe his dad was in the military so it was expected of him to join too.
Maybe he had a painful childhood and was looking for any kind of escape he could. Joining the Air Force could take him far from home.
Maybe he was a troubled youth who for whatever reason got into the Air Force to learn self-discipline.
Maybe he was too poor to afford college. I do believe the Air Force pays for your education if you join.

Now, that would be an interesting little side story to explore during an episode.
Trust me, I've met plenty of people like him in the Army. They usually don't stay past their initial enlistement, but some of them do and they tend to be and make people miserable, because most positions in the military require you too work with atleast 1 to 2 other people (atleast).

Well that's true, on both accounts, I think that he's character is somewhat interesting. I think it would be interesting to explore his character a bit further.

I think he may already be educated. But, I suppose that could have happened after he got into the Air Force. I think I read on IMDB or maybe Gateworld that he was a wiz in the math department but he never lets onto it.
From my own experiences I can say "most" people who act like that, the military was their last resort before jail time, thus still fighting their authority figures.

My guess is that he joined so he could fly.

!Spioler warning!
Wasn't there an episode where he & Ronon attended to Shep's fathers funeral (if I'm not mistaken that ep. was partailly written by Joe himself)

This above under "!Spioler warning!" could not bee seen in original post so I changed the colour. At least not on the Atlantis background setting.
And yes you are correct. In Season 4 actually.

Yeah, it wasn't meant to be seen without highlighting so people who didn't want that episode spoiled, you know...

What a neat idea. I would suggest in the future to let people know to highlight in order to see potential spoiler.....LOL!
It's true though. There are several countries that are behind the US airing (US based website here). So, yeah, what we think is a normal conversation could be spoiling something for someone watching in another country.

Probably the same morons that thought changing the show would be a good thing. Not a lot of brain power involved at the top, eh?

To each it's own opinion I guess. I thought it was because I would have never thought to do that or have never seen that before. So, I thought it was NEAT........I suppose you've seen a lot more than I, I'm guessing since you didn't find it so neat.
Oh well........
Cm.....I agree......I just couldn't figure out just what he would be doing if he wasn't in the military. I thought maybe football, but he isn't really built for pro football.....:thanx:
