Atlantis really hasn't grown on me as I had hoped it would. And I think the biggest reason I'm not liking it that well is because it feels too much like Star Trek.
Overall, it feels like a mix of Star Trek Voyager and Star Trek Deep Space Nine. The Voyager feel being that they are so far from home and not likely to ever get back in their lifetimes, but they keep trying and looking for a way.
The Deep Space Nine feel is the space station which moves, the connection to a religious people, and a war with a deadly enemy bent on destroying them. Atlantis is a vessel which can fly through outer space if they ever get enough power and can figure out how to work it. It is my understanding that this city was built on eart and flown through the universe. Or did I misunderstand?
Their connection to a religious, peaceful people (similar to the Bajorans) are Taelin's people (forgot what they're called), who have come to live in Atlantis. The war with a deadly enemy bent on destroying them (similar to the Dominion) are the Wraith.
Furthermore, there are transporters in Atlantis to get around. Transporters being common in Star Trek. Couldn't they have at least come up with a different name for them? They have space craft and this was the thing in SG-1 that made them start to feel more like Star Trek to a degree was developing their own spacecraft.
They even have a Scottish main character who isn't listed in the opening credits, who looks, imo, a lot like James Doohan who played Scotty in the original series.
Also, the Stargate crew - their clothes I think look a little like Star Trek uniforms.
Furthermore, Star Trek is notorious for creating series after series based upon the original idea, but they tend to lack in originality and interest. They seem to be made more for the fans and are lacking in creativity. Atlantis feels like that to me.
Other things I don't like about Atlantis - I don't like Weir and I don't really like the Canadian Guy. Weir doesn't seem to be capable to be in the position she's in. She seems too indecisive, insecure, and lacks strong leadership abilities. I don't see any reason why she's in this position because I don't think she has proven herself capable of the task.
As for the Canadian guy, he was humorous at first, but now I find him annoying.
Overall, I think the characters lack the chemistry that the SG-1 team had. SG-1 could have a weak storyline and plot, but the characters good natures and great chemistry made up for it. In fact, it's okay to have a weak story if you have strong characters. But I don't think it ever works to have a strong story and weak characters. SG-1, the chemistry really seemed to be there right from the beginning. Perhaps it helped that they had a movie first to establish the characters of Jack and Daniel for us. I just don't see any real chemistry between characters on Atlantis. I don't feel a real sense of comradery.
