In the hologram message, the lady ancient said that some of their people found shelter on other worlds and others went back to earth. I think in SG-1 it was mentioned that some of the Ancients ascended.

Here's a thought though. What if that message was not entirely accurate? Even though it took someone with the ancient gene to operate the message, that's not to say an enemy such as the Wraith would not one day discover Atlantis and that message.

So my thought is - what if the Ancients do still exist and found somewhere to exist in peace? Or did they all become ascended beings?

I think there is the potential for both scenarios. That would be awesome while on one of the away missions they ran into a small group of ancients.
