View Full Version : Why John?

John is like the most common, most boring male name I think. How many John's are there in the world?
In SG-1, Jack O'Neill's real first name was John. Now in Atlantis, I realized last night that Maj. Sheppard's first name is John. How unoriginal. Why couldn't think think up a better first name for Sheppard? Especially considering Sheppard is O'Neill for this show. It just seems a little too much. Couldn't they have thought up a different name? How about Steve? :b

Well, seeing that my sons name is Johnny I rather like the name. But, that said, I don't like the way John Sheppard rolls off the tongue. I didn't know that Jack was originally John either.
Anyhow, I think John is easy to remember, easy to say (for most races they may run into as well). Many men in leadership positions throughout history has the name John and that may be another reason.
Just a thought. No factual info behind it.

Yeah, but does he ever introduce himself as John? Seems like he always introduces himself as Maj. Sheppard, but then I haven't paid that close attention.
Johnny is cute, Jonathan is a bit different, but just plain John, also the name of a bathroom. :p
I don't think John seems to suit him though. When I heard Weir call him John in the episode last night, I just thought, "That name doesn't suit him." How about Tom? :shep
Jack is a nickname for the name John. Jack Sheppard is the name of a character in something, I just can't remember exactly what at the moment.

I specifcally did not name my son John for some of those reasons. People always want to call him John or Jonathan. But it is Johnny on his birth certificate and so I make people call him that.
My BIL keeps telling me that he'll never be president with the name Johnny instead of John. I say good cause I want him to be an astronaut. LOL!
Anyhow, when I found out his name was John (Maj Sheppard), I didn't think it fit him either. Oddly enough he really fits his name "Joe". How much you wanna bet, down the line somewhere that it is related somehow to John. LOL!
Then again, the actor who plays Lt. Aiden Ford (which I don't think fits either) name is "Rainbow".

Yeah, I think Joe fits him.
