My reaction to this...

Ho-ly shoot. It's dark, it's cool. Surprised me for sure.

The only character I like is Dr. Rush. He is something else indeed. I liked Robert Carlyle's acting before...he just fits this part so well.

The one that annoys me to no end is the senators daughter. Somebody throw her out one of the air leaks in the ship.

Like the set...like the theme song too. Very Steam Punk look and feel to the ship.

Nice ship (Destiny). Interesting concept...now lets see where this goes.

I wonder if Col. Everett Young's wife (played by Ona Grauer she played the Ancient Ayiana in SG-1 and Atlantis) if that is going to mean something later in this show. *shruggs* Who knows...

Hmm. I don't know what to say, exactly...SGU wasn't what I expected. I thought it would be Stargate: Voyager, but it's seeming more like Battlestar Gate-lactica...I'm not sure I like it. It did have it's moments, though, and the CGI is mind-blowing. I like the Battlestar-type shaky camera thing for the space battles and stuff, but it doesn't quite feel right to me when used on people. It was very effective in cultivating the dark emotional atmosphere of the show, however, and I think it's the emotion of the show more than anything mechanics-wise (cameras, CGI, etc.) that will keep me coming back. There are a few things I don't like, but all in all, I just HAVE to see more. I wanna see where this is going, like AC said.
Now, as for the characters...the only ones who really stood out in any way for me were Rush and Eli. Rush is cool, kind of like a slightly sinister version of McKay's antisocial genius, without the humor. I wonder what's going on with him, we've already seen he can be deceptive and manipulative...hero or villain? I'm not sure.
I like the character of Eli Wallace more than I thought I would. He's definitely providing comic relief in an otherwise dark show, but he does it realistically, like he's laughing out of desperation instead of making light of the situation.

BSG...I find it nothing like BSG. But that's my opinion. :D

Funny Wraith, while I didn't get to see the entire episode, my first impression (30 mins into it or so) was a little BSG.

But,I'll have to reserve all other comments until after I was the rest of it.

Pretty much agree with all comments so far. I never watched the BSG remake, but know what it was all about stylistically, so can understand where you guys see the similarities. Rush and Eli are my current favourites too. The senator's daughter has had her reality check, but the IOA rep is still going through hers. It better happen fast for her too, otherwise that confined marine will eat her for breakfast! He's just looking for an excuse to empty a magazine.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the way this turned out. But I wasn't doubting it. From the spoilers the producers were telling us about, to the trailers they teased us with, I knew I'd enjoy it.

I seem to have the same feelings about it as most of you, actually.

The new camera work was definitely hard to get used to; I'm probably still trying to adjust to it. It'll probably take a while to warm up to it, I guess. I didn't much care for the senator or his daughter, and all (or most) the things she was saying about him after he died seemed a little contradictory to how I saw him act the rest of the episode.

I'm not sure what to think of most of the characters, really, but I'm so thoroughly intrigued by Dr. Rush. He's such a mystery to me, really, I'm very curious to see what he's up to. So far he's definitely the best part of the show, to me. Eli turned out better than I'd thought he would, so that's another plus. He sorta reminds me a little bit of McKay, actually.

I enjoyed it, really interested to see where it goes. It'll probably take several more episodes to really be able to say for sure whether I like it or not, but I like it so far. Extremely curious about a lot of things, to say the least; especially wanna see what the gates on the planets look like. Biggest question though, to me, is: Who was attacking the base, and why? It was totally out of the blue, in the scope of the series.

About the ships that were attacking the base...I saw Gliders and Ha'tak...I could not see the big ship that the gliders were coming out of..was that the Ha'tak?

Yeah, what I'm wondering is who's piloting them and why. Is it Free Jaffa, the Lucian Alliance, or are they working for an unknown Goa'uld?

I'm confused as to why the Hammond got their teeth handed to them...don't they have Asgard beam weapons on all Daedalus class ships?

Good question, Wraith. Looks like that's one of the question we'll have to wait for answers too. Even Sam had no idea who they were.

Oh yeah, that too. Those plasma beams make short work of hive ships, I can't imagine ha'taks being much worse. Maybe they couldn't use them because of the planet's instability or whatever? I dunno. I do wonder how many of our questions are actually going to be answered, lol.

It was mentioned at the beginning of that attack on board the Hammond that it was the Lucian Alliance attacking.

The show was definately interesting. I can see the BSG likeness. That thought had cross my mind as well. Not so much the camera shots, but more of the darkness and doom and gloom. You can already see how different this show is from the others. FOLLOWING POSSIBLE SPOILER: For example, you never saw a hookup in a closet in SG-1 or Atlantis.

I agree with AC. The senator's daughter has got to go. She is going to hold the show back. Although, I will say, I do admire the senator himself. It was refreshing to see a politician on one of these SG shows that was thinking of others as opposed to himself.

That Eli is going to be a trip. I laughed at him so much. I like the Marine that was left in charge. I think he, Eli, and Rush will carry the show. Rush is definately an interesting character. I think he will not be the villian, but he will be the type of guy that will keep you guessing exactly what is the method of his madness.

Knowing the Alliance, they more than likely gave all the ships upgrades. And they did take part in the Ori fight, so they have first hand experience of Earth's Asgard weapons. I think a full recap is in order before the next episode.

No, Carter guessed it was the Alliance but she wasn't sure. Probably was, though.

Sorry I am new... But Wraith is right, it was random Ha'tak (don't know if that is spelled right). But the planet went up cause of the massive bombardment they did as soon as they dropped out of hyperspace. Causing the planet to go super nova.

But as the series goes on I may grow to like it or hate it. It is depressive to see that tv has been going "DRAMA FTW" I hoping they livin up alit. But as effects and camra's I like.

But it didn't make sense if one battlecruiser can take on two Ori ships. A fleet of Ha'taks shouldn't stand a chance.

As always, they have to make the Earthlings look weak and not feared. Which is a pet-peeve, we took down Snakes,Robos,Life-suckers, and Batteries beings. Why don't we get a little respect!

Hi UntoldStory, welcome to the SGC. Don't worry about jumping in headfirst! :) Ha'tak is spelled right, I'm pretty sure. Yeah, Stargate doesn't need to be any more 'gritty' in my opinion.

Angelica Constantine

Personally, I think the grit was well expected and needed. So far they are showing what would actually happen if. So many shows they always have an easy way out of a situation. Well, this shows that nothing is exactly easy. :D

TheUntoldStory

That is true, but if it was real world and I was enemies of Earth. I would take a moment and think on how they managed to tumble every major power balance in two galaxies. Then think about my three little ha'tak vs a ship that can take on two Ori ships and win; where a fleet of ha'tak doesn't even put a dent in one of the Ori ship's. So randomly attacking them with brut force would be a no fly for me.

So that part of the start up of SGU was my pet peeve. (They could of easily destroy the ha'taks, but still have the planet blow cause of the ha'tak bombardment after exiting hyperspace. But do to the intense energy build up from the planet Hammon couldn't beam people a board and that the energy was spiking to high to go to earth.)

That would of been a better start up for me or atleast say the weapon system on the Hammon wasn't working yet.
