View Full Version : Romantic interests?

I'm a little confused. I got the distinct impression at the start of this series that Taela was going to evolve as Shepherd's romantic interest, but there are times when I seem to detect a little flirtation between Shepherd and Wehr. Is Shepherd just going to be a playboy scouting the field? I hope they give his character more weight than that. So far, he just seems to be a wise cracking smart aleck.

I try to avoid predicting romances in tv series. They're going to do anything to make the show interesting and have all sorts of plot twists and all that. I think if Sheppherd ever gets married, it would be to Taela. However, I don't think SG-1 ever had any of the main cast get romantically involved with anyone for too long a period. I have the first season of SG-1 on dvd and I seen hints between Carter and O'Neill and hints between Carter and Jackson, but ultimately Carter seemed to develop more of a sister-like status with them. It's possible and probable that Sheppherd will develop a brother-like status with Weir and Taela. Though a Taela and Sheppherd relationship could be likely. I absolutely do not see a relationship forming between Sheppherd and Weir.
Although. . .
Sheppherd should know better that in his rank, he is the highest ranking military officer, it would be strongly inadvisable to seek a relationship with the leader of the colony, or governor, whatever her title is. But we know Sheppherd is not one for always following the rules. And Weir seems rather weak-willed in my opinion. She isn't military, she's a civilian and I don't think she's ever been in a position like this before.
One example that comes to my mind of this is in the episode where the puddlejumper got stuck in the Stargate when she got confronted by the jerk with a ponytail who was upset at how she talked to him in front of the group. Shoot, if I was her, I'd want to slap him just to get that smug look off his face.

Yeah, I remember that episode, and I am waiting for the other shoe to drop in a future episode featuring that guy. Weir or Wehr, however it is spelled, had left a guy on Earth before she left, as I was reminded of in the most recent episode this past weekend when they supposedly went back to Earth (it turned out to be illusory).
So I agree that if there is to be a romantic interest, it will be between Taela and Shepherd, but I want to point out the difference between SG1 and Atlantis in this regard. With SG1, you have the two main characters with romantic interests are both professional military. And one of them is in the direct chain of command over the other. In the military, this is the biggest No-No you can imagine, especially since the Tailhook convention scandal that rocked the Navy. So no matter what their feelings for each other, they will never act on them.
The other romantic interest for Sam is Daniel, but remember, he began the series with a "wife" and he is devoted to her exclusively. (It is one of the main reasons he stayed with the Stargate program and came back to Earth in the series premiere) So I cannot see a relationship developing between the two of them, even though he is technically a civilian. Also, he is now under her direct command as well, and she would feel that such a relationship is innapropriate, even though he is not military.
Shepherd, on the other hand, is not only not such a stickler for military details, but neither of the possible interests for him are in the military, so the possibilities are more open for him. However, Weir is in his "chain of command" , so that might complicate things, but they are both so far away from Earth, and there is really no higher authority to answer to, so they could fudge on that detail, and probably get away with it.
On the other hand, he would be totally in the clear with Taela, since she not only is not in the military, but isn't even subject to Earth customs, technically. She is the leader of her own people, and would probably do what she wanted romantically, whether it was approved of or not by Weir or any "Earth authority figure".
I do think she respects Shepherd as an equal as far as being a leader of his people and a warrior, so if he suggested they restrain themselves in the interest of professional relationships, she would likely agree. But then again, she is an alien, technically, and her ideas about what is appropriate are wide open for development. So the whole discussion is interesting, but could go any direction really.

Probably another good reason not to get involved with such a high ranking person from another race. Being a leader is a sticky situation in itself, let alone getting involved with someone so high in the ranks of another race. Could make for another enemy development down the road.
