I will be the first to admit, I never listen to Rodney or LtCol Carter when they are talking technical aspects of the stargate and related stargate stuff.

So, my question is how do the Zed devices (is that what they are called) work?

The reason I asked is, if they use the ZD to open a worm hole to get to Atlantis, why didn't they use it to get back to Atlantis, but instead was on the Pegasus.

I'm sure there is a reason, but I just wasn't paying attention.

Plus, for some reason, I thought there were two ZD. But, is there only one?

I believe there is only one. They used it to power the Stargate to send reinforcements to Atlantis. They then sent the ZPM device onboard the Pegasis (not sure the name of the ship) to Atlantis. The resoning I believe was incase of evacuation we could get out of Atlantis ASAP. and Atlantis would be in control of Calling Stargate Command.

How is it the initial trip to Atlantis depleted the zpm's power but the trip through this time did not?

You know that is a good question. I will have to wait till sg Atlantis comes out on dvd and rewatch the first episode.

I'm thinking maybe it was a damaged zpm or something.

Actually they have the two-part series premiere out on dvd. I saw it in a store one day. But I kept thinking it's bound to be in the box set, so why waste my money on one two-part episode now?

Wow, I hadn't even thought about it. That's a really good question. And if the power could be depleted, then what's the point of bringing it to Atlantis if it's only going to work a few times?

yea,

I saw that dvd too, but like you I expect it will be in the season 1 box set that comes out this fall.

It's interesting how we are talking about how the zpm can be depleted, because I was watching the Monday night Stargate lastnight and one of the episodes is when Carter talks about the zpm from the dialing device they found in antartica. I always wonderd why Stargate command never ended up using the device as it would be much safer. But that could be a who nother thread. Anyway she stated that the zpm ran out of juice after testing it for a couple of months. Hence they theoized that the Antartica gate was one of the oldest gates, or one of the first built. Thus I can theorize a zpm must have a life span of around 50 million years, depending on use.

Hmmmm.......wonder if the ancients knew that when they developed them.

Well we know they can become depleted because in Lost City after they retrieved the zpm from the fiery planet and went to Antarctica, they found the zpm in Antarctica was depleted which is why they had to go to that fiery planet.

If they don't figure out how to make those things they're never going to last. Well, of course they'll last because this is tv. But if this was realistic, they would have to know how to make zpm's if they can run out of energy so easily.

I agree. The key to everything here is how a zpm works. I think Stargate Command would best use it's research funds by putting them into the study of the zpm. You figure that and everything else falls into place.

Sounds like something they are keeping on a back burner for end of season or begining of a new season.
