OK, we now know who is playing Dr. David Rush, the commander of the team for Stargate Universe - Robert Carlyle: http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2008/12/robert-carlyle.html
I'm not sure how I feel about this. He is fine in many roles but somehow never a Sci-Fi actor to me. But brilliant in many others so, if I was a fair man, I would have to give him a chance (and yes, the words were well chosen there...)
If you don't know him, look him up on the IMDB: http://uk.imdb.com/name/nm0001015/

wow. is this serious or did april come early? he's a pretty big name for a tv series. you're quite right, drspin. i can't quite picture him in a sci-fi role either. definitely with a gun though. he was good in 24: redemption, and in pretty much all the action films i've seen him in. i guess we'll have to see how he fairs. hopefully minus a fake accent.

I have to admit I am a little shocked by this as well. Not taking anything away from Robert Carlyle, he is a fine actor, but I was under the impression that they were gearing this series to "a younger audience." I guess I was expecting a lot of talentless young actors (barely in their 20's) getting their first break. LOL.
There might be hope for this show yet. Have to wait to see the rest of the lineup. I know I said I may not watch this show, but what else am I going to do on a Friday night.

Still, it doesn't really matter: he's Scottish and he's a Doctor. He'll be dead within weeks...
Seriously, RC is more a film actor - although he's done series, its been several years since he's been a regular (Hamish Macbeth). This may be unfair of me but I doubt he'll be with the series more than a maximum of 3 years.

With the same ones running the show that ran SG-1 and Atlantis he might be off in less time than that. Who knows, the show may not even be on the air in 3 years.

Come on Robin, tell us how you really feel. XD I think everyone is in the mood to eat popcorn and have ringside seats again while you lay the smackdown on Cooper again. XD:woo:

ROFLMBO!
Let's just say that anything Robert Cooper is associated with in any way, that has "Stargate" in the title in any way, is not something I'm going to spend my time on. This group, and RC in particular, have no loyalty to the fans who MAKE these shows the hits that they are. They wanted a 'younger' audience. RC "only writes beginnings", apparently he hates writing endings, and was 'tired' of doing that for SG-1 (which, had the idiot been paying attention, he hadn't been doing since the fourth season!). The fans can just 'accept' what is offered to them. Uh huh. This fan walked away when they killed SG-1 in season 9, episode 1. (I, and a majority of those original 'Gaters' who had remained even after the collasal screwups of seasons 5/6 and 8.) Haven't looked back.
So, they can just snuggle this new "Stargate" show in between the wrestling and Myth Busters (which is so much ****...they continually try to compare bananas to oranges...can't be done!) and I'll still not turn on Sci-fi!
*takes a deep breath*
The preceding announcement is purely personal opinion and in no way reflects the official stance of Stargate Command.

Reflect away Robin. I agree with you. I am sure most if not all agree with you.
But from an OFFICIAL stand point I guess we better say....Its our individual opinions that make us so unique at the SGC. :raz:

I think the most disheartening thing about the whole deal is, Stargate fans have lost both Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. There was no logical reason for ending the shows (the ratings bruhaha is just a cop out...SG-1 had higher ratings when it was canceled than Atlantis had, and Atlantis was one of the highest ranked shows on the 'Sci-fi' Channel!) Yet we're supposed to welcome this new show with open arms and bated breath.
Oh well, it was great while it lasted, there are still places like Stargate Command where I can come and 'talk' Stargate to my heart's content, and there's always fan fiction and the official books (including audio books) that will keep the 'show', or at least the characters, alive!

Thanks, AC! I'm glad to be here, and thoroughly enjoy 'chatting' with all of the great members.
Nice to see that our little group is growing, too. It's always fun to add new voices to the conversations.

I do understand people's dislike of the concept - but there is no way that I won't be in front of the tele when episode 1 is aired. I reserve the right to switch off but I'll be there for the start.

And, my friend, that is fine with us!
My refusal to even watch stems to experience with RC and co. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

LOL - I do know how you feel though. There are some films I never want to see as I love the originals just so much: how can the new Pink Panther film compaer with Peter Sellers and Herbert Lom? What possible need was there to re-make the Omen. And the Producers without Zero Mostel is a shooting offence in my humble opinion...

What I haven't figured out is the need to make 'movies' out of 80's sitcoms (or cop shows). These weren't high quality shows to begin with...fun to watch, but not worth making a movie out of! Are the writers in Hollyweird that untalented that they can't come up with better ideas? Or did someone see the popularity of TVLand (hey, producers/writers/directers...buy clue! Those old TV shows were worth watching...unlike the **** that they keep tossing out now!) and decide to make money off of those shows?
DrSpin

Now there I couldnt agree with you more. But I wish it was limited to just the 80s. OK, mybe a few exceptions (the Addams Family was superb) but most of the re-makes are rubbish and are insults to the original. The Avengers movie was probably the ultimate insult to a series that I have ever seen.
Never really struck me before: except Stargate, are there any real successes that went the other way, Movie to TV?

I have a confession to make. There is one 80's sitcom that was made into a movie that I loved. Miami Vice (don't beat me please!). I thought Collin Farrell and Jamie Fox were great in that movie. I even have the DVD.
Robin K

Actually, I think Miami Vice was a better movie than a TV series, JMHO.
The Avengers is a TV classic, I had friends who were bitterly disappointed in the movie, so I never saw it.
No, I don't think there's been a success like Stargate, going from big screen to TV...maybe that's why TPTB screwed it up, they didn't know what to do with a hit like that!

I can't say that I ever watched either Miami Vice but did like the sillyness of the Dragnet with Dan Ackroyd and Tom Hanks (while I really didn't take to the childish antics of Starsky and Hutch on the big screen)
Robin K
12-19-2008, 08:22 PM
Starsky and Hutch (big screen version) was just insulting, as far as I'm concerned. It wasn't even funny...just...just...insulting!
With Dan Ackroyd and Tom Hanks, "Dragnet" couldn't be anything but good...Ackroyd has perfect comedic timing, and Hanks is a terrific comedic actor in his own right.

Another reason I liked Dragnet perhaps is that I never saw the original series.
The Hitch Hikers film wasn't bad as such - its just coincidental that of the roughly 100 fans of the the BBC TV Series that I know, NOT ONE of them prefer the film. Its a perfectly fine film but the original cast, although not big names at all, just defined the roles absolutely perfectly and were, in this instance, better.
