The official spelling is zat'nik'tel.

The first time that Jack, Daniel and Sam are introduced to the weapon is during the first season 'cliff hanger', "Within the Serpent's Grasp', on Apophis' ship.

Jack, of course, immediately renamed the zat'nik'tel's they found 'zat guns'. And 'zat' is what they were referred to as being after that.

Holy faux pas Batman. I had no idea how to spell it, so I got this spelling from Gateworld (http://www.gateworld.net/omnipedia/technology/index.shtml). I can't believe they are spelling it wrong.

Strange that Gateworld would be spelling it wrong!

Yep, it is to get rid of the body / evidence. Cleans up the mess.
I am sure that was explained in one of the episodes. I just can not remember what one off the top of my head. hmmm

The first time they use the ZAT-guns, Teal'c demonstrates them by first stunning, killing and finnaly disintergrating a serpent guard. He disinegrates it so nobody can find the body (cause a dead body would kind of blow their cover).
