A Puddle Jumper is a spacecraft in the Stargate universe that is capable of planetary and space flight. The puddle jumpers were created by the Ancients and were stored in some of their outposts, including Atlantis. The ships were named by John Sheppard, who got the name from the puddle-like appearance of the event horizon of the stargate.

The Asurans (replicator Ancients) call them gate-ships.

I dont' think SHepp should be allowed to name anything else.....LOL!
Although, I think Shepps name had to do with him being a pilot.

Him being superior to Ford & McKay, and I think he was only joking at first but they just kept the name. He general names things to tease McKay, like in Inferno (McKay wants to call the ship Enterprise, Shep says Orion).

Well, for pilots, puddle jumper also means small aircraft........

lol, I misread your #5 post, I processed it like 'he was the pilot, so he named it'. XD

It's pretty cool when they take the jumpers underwater (in Grace under Pressure & the Return pt2).

I do find them for a mode of transportation to be quite efficient. Not too small, not to big. I'm tickled that they fit right in the Atlantis gate room. Although, after doing some reading, the best I can find is that it only fits 8-10 drones. I suppose it would fall into that "light combat" category....LOL!
