View Full Version : An Introduction to the SFA's and Skiffy's

Hello! I'm so excited to be able to share this with everyone in the forum!

While there are several fan fiction awards programs in the Stargate fandom, only two fit what I call the 'criteria' of a good award program...and that is to be open to everyone, and that they focus on Stargate, and the very things that make Stargate one of the most popular Sci-fi shows EVER!

The most popular and 'well known' award program is the Stargate Fan Awards. While they do have a reputation for being very slow, and not giving nominees and nominators updates often enough, this group does their best to see to it that everyone nominated has the chance to participate. The 2007 Winners list was just announced, and within a few weeks the 2008 nominations will begin. You can check this award site out here:

Stargate Fan Awards (SFA's) (http://www.stargatefanawards.com/main/news.php)

The second program is just two years old, and as such, is still growing. Called the "Skiffy Awards", this program also embraces other fandoms, this round includes Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and Supernatural. The Stargate fandom is the primary focus of these awards at this time.

The nominee list has been announced, and voting has begun for the 2008 Skiffy's. The nominee list is here (http://www.freewebs.com/skiffyawards/2008round1nominees.htm). Once you've perused your favorite categories and subcategories, return to the top of the page, and click on "Forums". You have to register in the forum, but that's just 'standard procedure' (SFA's also require registration, it helps to control any cheating that might be attempted.) Once you've registered, go into the forum, and find "Skiffy Voting!" Click on it, and you'll see a list of 'threads', which have the categories and subcategories listed. Find the category/subcategory where your favorite stories are, and vote. Just that easy!

Both of these programs showcase the work of fan fiction authors, fan art, fan videos and fan media. While not perfect, both try to operate a fair program, and while both accept slash (a rather minor, but very 'vocal' group among the fandom), neither accept work that would be considered distasteful. Both do accept adult work, so please be certain to check out the ratings of the work before you look, if you don't wish to read/view anything with a high/strong rating.

So, head on over and take a look! Enjoy the 'feast for the soul' that is offered. Find those favorites and vote! (And, take a minute or two to let that author/artist know that you enjoyed their work...feedback is absolute 'soul food' for the online author/artist!)

Actually, cM, you probably shouldn't finish reading it. As glad as I am that you enjoy it, the work on my site is adult, and you're just not old enough for the stories there. When you hit 18, please come back to read!

However, there are some terrific 'gen' stories listed with both Stargate Fan Awards and the Skiffy Awards, and I encourage you to go and read those stories!

(And each 'page' that you're reading on my site is actually a chapter...most chapters run from 15 to 22 pages.)

They might not be aware, but I'll bet they do care. And school work is very important. You need good grades, to get into a good college, to get a degree that will give you the skills/knowledge to find a job that will support you for the rest of your life. No one ever said that life isn't annoying. Better get used to it now! *grin*

You will when you get older and "pay scale" is dependent on your education. I didn't like school at your age either, but I didn't think it sucked. :raz:

One thing I've learned in life is that attitude is everything. If you approach life with a negative attitude, you'll have nothing but negativity in your life. Instead of sitting around complaining that 'school sucks', try to find the things that you like about it. Focus on those aspects...you know, accentuate the positive.

And just exactly what about school 'sucks'? The cl*****...as in the curriculum, or the teachers, or the other students?

Oh, and think about this...every person who worked in the SGC had a good education, the majority of them held at least one degree. ALL military officers must be college graduates. Just a thought that might help.

That word up ^ there cM is "cla-sses". Just incase ya didn't get that. That would be the sensors...some times its very touchy.

But Robin and Nf are very correct about what they said. I would listen to them if I were you. :D

And guiding the thread back on track here...be sure to get over to the Skiffy site...lots of great stories over there, and be sure to drop a vote for your favorite!

it social studies and e.l.a that i could care less about i only like science when we have labs spanish is ok and i only like math because of the teacher mr kinsella is funny and a great person the only time i liked s.s. was in 6th grade when i learned about ancient egypt and all that stuff the mythology caught my attention.

Robin K

One very important thing to remember about history and social studies:

You can't know where you're going if you don't know where you've been.

It's important that we learn history, so that we can try to learn from the mistakes of the past, so that we don't repeat them.

Social studies help us to learn about those in other countries...fear is caused by the unknown. Remove that factor, and there is no fear. With the fear removed, there's hope for real understanding between peoples. With understanding comes acceptance. And from acceptance, peace.

Robin, I got a question. I was looking at the nominee list (again) and was wondering what OC next to the title means. And, I must have not scrolled all the way down. I thought 8 nominations. But, this morning, I counted 11 nominations.

Well done Robin. I had started reading When Two Hearts Collide a while back. I may have to pick it back up and start reading it again. I think I'm about 1/2 through the story.

Renee's story Popcorn Doesn't Lie is intriguing me by the title alone......LOL. Looks like I may have found my after Stephen King (I must read atleast one SK book in the summer) reading material.........

Oh and who knew there was already Evan Lorne fanfic out there.....LOL.

You all make me want to start writing again. I don't do fanfic, but I do enjoy writing.

Again......Good luck both of you.

To everyone else, if your into reading fanfic, I highly recommend Robin K's stories and her postings of her friends/co-writers stories.

Okay, "OC" means "Original Character".

"Popcorn Doesn't Lie" isn't a horror story...it's definitely not Stephen King-esque. (I'm not sure Renee even reads Stephen King)

LOL! Pick a Stargate SG-1 or Atlantis character, major or minor, and there is fan fiction out there for him/her!

Oh, I love that you're feeling inspired! No matter what you write...do it!!!

Thanks for the kind words, NF! We appreciate the support!

Just received this today, and wanted to make certain that anyone who did have trouble registering, is aware that the problems have been fixed. You don't need to register in order to read, but you do in order to vote (this prevents any attempts at cheating.)

Subject: To the members of the Skiffy Awards/Techiedom forum ( From Techiedom ) From:http://mail.opi.yahoo.com/online?u=bitemetechie&m=g&t=0 (http://messenger.yahoo.com/messenger/download/index.html) "Techiedom" <bitemetechie@yahoo.com>
It's that time again! Your weekly reminder to vote, vote, vote in the
Skiffy awards! We've had a huge upsurge in membership recently and
several of you didn't get confirmation e-mails! Gasp! Shock, horror, dismay!

Don't worry, though. If you were unable to log-in to your account
because of this, the error has been fixed by the administration team and
everyone that had a valid e-mail address should now be able to log-in to
their accounts and vote!

Don't forget to stop by the thread for choosing what universe we should
include next round. That particular poll had to be reset because some
people didn't read the instructions attached to it before voting! Vote
for your TOP THREE universes, not just one!

As usual, I remind you to spread the word about the awards in any way
you can. We're growing, but we're still a very small operation and we
depend on YOU to help make us a success!

On behalf of the awards team,
Techie

So let's help the Skiffy team make this round of Skiffy Awards the most successful ever! Run, don't walk to the Skiffy Awards and read, read, read! And then vote for your favorites!!

Here's the link directly to the awards listings:
