Apophis is the first Goa'uld we meet...after having 'met' Ra in the movie, and watched Daniel and Jack rid the universe of him.

Of course, his first act in the show is to kidnap a US Air Force officer. The next time we see him, he's taking off with Sha're and Skaara. So of course, our animosity toward Apophis is now in full bloom.

He taunts Daniel and SG-1, and in general, makes a Goa'uldish pest of himself.

We learn through the course of the show that Apophis wasn't always one of the greater System Lords, his rise in power came as he swept in and took what had belonged to others.

Played by actor Peter Williams, Apophis was one of the most resilient System Lords, but I don't think he was ever as charismatic as Ba'al, or even Camulus. Having taken Daniel's wife in the series premier, there was no way he was ever going to be 'likable'.

Nope. I didn't like him either. But, I suppose that was the point eh. And the thing is, it wasn't like Ba'al or Camulus where you loved to hate them. I just hated Apophis.

One thing I will say though, I wish they would have wrapped up his storyline a little sooner. I was almost as sick as Jack of seeing Apophis.....LOL......but, I do have to give Peter Williams his props. He played him well.

****not like we won't see him again****

Nope - disagree completely. This was the enemy who really believed he was god and all who were there had one purpose: to serve him. He was a spectacular villain, evil in every way (my god is a jealous god and all that). And almost as much as the members of SG-1, he set the tone for the series itself. Yes, I love Baal BUT don't believe that Baal would have been anywhere near as effective a character if there hadn't been Apophis there first.

And staying on Baal vs Apophis - Baal wasn't the new Apophis - Anubis was the closest to a replacement IMHO. Because at the start, Apophis was there to show the might of the implacable enemy that we were facing. I don't think that any of us doubted that either of them were a threat of the destroying kind. This was never what Baal was (well, maybe just a bit).

Yeah, Apophis was awesome as a villain. I "loved to hate" Baal, but Apophis was the definitive Goa'uld who set the tone for the species as a whole. He was arrogant (granted, most Goa'uld are, but he especially seemed to believe he actually was a god, whereas Baal knew he wasn't and just played around with it), he was tough (he "died" almost as many times as Daniel), and he never knew when to quit. Perfect villain, but I did despise him. I do agree that Anubis was more like "the new Apophis" than Baal - totally evil and relentless.

I could not stand Apophis. He made my skin crawl. Of course I was partcial to Camulus for other reasons:cool::drool:

However, as far as villians go, I am going to be old school on this one, I am going to have to go with Ra himself. We need a thread on Ra (he might have been the major motion picture Gould, but he was still a Gould).

I'm not saying that Apophis wasn't the 'perfect' villain, he was. What I'm saying is that he never had the 'appeal' that Ba'al and Camulus had, or even Nirrti, in her delicious, over the top, nasty way.

Yes, Apophis was the consummate Goa'uld. He just didn't have the 'presence' of Ba'al especially.

Did you just call Nirrti delicious? EWWWWW....she looks like a transvestite. Especially with her deep manly Goa'uld voice...
Anywho, I forgot to mention one thing about Apophis. He was creepy. Really creepy.

Not Nirrti herself. Read it again. What was 'delicious' (which is just another way of saying that the actress took the part and totally ran away with it!) was her over-the-top Goa'uld-ish ways, her downright evil exploits to develop the perfect host.

The woman that played Nirrti did a fantastic job. Nerrit was not like the other Goa'uld in that she did not act like she was a god. She was just the ultimate beyotch of the galaxy. She did not need her Jaffa to whip your backside.

I so agree! She was determined to create the perfect host, which would have given her the ultimate control over all of the Goa'uld, who would have wanted such hosts for themselves. Nirrti was a very scheming, calculating bewitch of the highest degree, and always fun to watch!

Okay, I see what you mean. Still, she was the creepiest Goa'uld there was in my opinion. Especially when she tried to seduce Jonas Quinn.
Didn't this thread used to be about Apophis? lol

Actually, I found Apophis easier to watch. He looked like he was supposed to be a man...but so did Nirrti. Which made her scarier. She could take him in a fight, any day.

I had to think about this for a while but I know what I loved about Apophis: He was so intense but didn't need to talk much. Minimalist, powerful and quiet - it just added to the menace.

I'll agree he wasn't much of a fighter himself - but he was the one wit the energy shield so Nirrti may have problems with that! I'm still unsure what choosing first Bra'tac and then Teal'c as First Prime says for his taste - in some ways excellent; in others, not so.

For the first 'bad guy' in the series, Apophis was aces. He's just not my 'favorite' Goa'uld. Nor did he have the audience 'appeal' that Ba'al has had. Again, no reflection on Apophis or Peter Williams...it has more to do with their particular story arcs.
