Louis Gossette Jr. is a wonderful actor and played the part well, however, the character of Gerek definately had some control issues which led to his fall from grace so to speak.

Gerak was a First Prime to a Goa'uld who was in service to Anubis, and then to Ba'al. He promoted the 'old ways' of Jaffa life, leaving us to believe that the Jaffa weren't always slaves to the Goa'uld. It might have been their warrior lifestyle (as witnessed by the discovery of the Sodan, who were warriors who had broken away from the Goa'uld 5,000 years ago. That they returned to the "Jaffa ways" is intimated in that episode) that led to their being taken by the Goa'uld to serve as a slave army. This desire to return to the old ways is what put Gerak at the helm of the new, free Jaffa nation.

Gerak embraced the teachings of Ori, but when he realized his mistake, he sacrificed himself to save thousands.
