They're usually there. Chuck, Peter Grodin, Walter, etc and they perform a service in Atlantis and the SGC, but if we were to take them away, would the entire structure of operations fall apart, or would we be simply able to see more storyline instead?

If the structure of the SGC is the way most military operations are, eliminating one element/person will not cause it to fall apart. That is what they have "back up" for. Besides, really if something were to happen to the gate Sam could always do that job, heck Jack could probably.......probably.

Oh yeah, he is a hoot. Didn't even realize how much I liked his character until a few years into watching the show.

Walter's great.
Of course the whole unit (or TV show) wouldn't fall apart because of one or two people
But do we really want to see essential team members (team members like Jack and Sam) doing the job of a non-essential member? :huh1:
So, yeah I don't think we really need those guys (and I don't think it would add anything to the storyline in they were gone IMO, I mean how many lines do they have in the entire 10 years), but aren't they great to have around.

Theyr so insignificant, but you need someone to make sure the gate is safe, you can't leave it unmanned

I noticed Chuck doesn't do it. lol

They might not be necessary, But they may prove to be very important at some times

Now, now cM. They are not annoying. It is necessary for some gate techs to do that it makes them feel important.

Actually, if you want to get all technical........it is important. Not all personnel involved are looking directly at the gate, their function is to be monitoring other things. So, in order for everyone to be on the same sheet of music and know what is going on, calling out the chevrons and such is important.
Does that make sense?

Right, but how would you justify the Altantis dialing sequence that disregards the calling of chevrons?

Um, can't recall the last time I saw anything going on at the gate on Atlantis. But, I'm guessing they still need technicians to monitor the system in general. I'm sure their job description doesn't just say "call out the chevrons".
LOL!

Exactly...there are a lot of jobs 'behind the scenes' that if they aren't done, and done properly, then nothing else can be accomplished.

Could have something to do with the size of the area the Stargate itself is in. The 'gate room at the SGC isn't all that large. People who might be working in the 'gate room need to know how much time they have to move out of harm's way before the event horizon opens.
On Atlantis, there's nothing there to need repair/inspection, thus, there aren't any techs working who need the 'warning'.
JMHO.

SCENE: Sergeant Davis being filmed in control room.
DAVIS: Well, basically when the gate is dialing I say cheveron 1 encoded, cheveron 2 encoded, and so on ... incrementally up to the 7th cheveron which is a little different because that's when the wormhole connects ... err ... when that happens I like to shakes things up a little bit and just say cheveron 7 locked *grinning*
BREGMAN: Locked ... That's great ... that's good. Anything else?
DAVIS: Oh yea ... I'm responsible for this *places his hand on the palm scanner* close the iris ... *Iris shuts* Open the Iris. *Iris ... ... opens*
BREGMAN: Huh.
DAVIS: *sits back grinning proudly nodding his head as if to say ' impressive right.'* That's pretty much my job right there.

I absolutely adore that scene. From what I've gleaned from convention transcripts, that was thrown in after the question was asked of Gary Jones, "Just what does "Chevron Guy" do besides call out the Chevrons?"
Of course, if Stargate was 'real' then Walter Harriman's job would be a bit more involved, and there were several references to him being General Hammond's aide, and then Jack's when he was promoted. That is a time and detail intensive job!

That is no joke. Tim is a general's aide and still has to do his own job. And, no, despite working at the Pentagon, he does not get to call out the chevrons, when they go who knows where. LOL!
Thank goodness he is not his driver too!
