Okay, so I've been talking lately to a lot of people who are into Stargate Slash Fiction. For those of you who don't know what that is, it's basically same-sex pairings, usually male oriented. The most popular pairings are Jack/Daniel and Sheppard/McKay.

Anyways, I find a lot of them hold hostility towards other characters simply because the character hinders this male/male pairing. For example, a few people I've talked to hate Sam because she breaks the allusion of the Jack and Daniel pairing.

Is this a legitimate reason to hate a character?

I don't think so. I do not write Slash but the odd time when I am down and need a good belly laugh I read one and when I am done think..hummm I needed a good laugh. And, how sick do you really need to be to have two very visable headrosexual males going at it...Like common...I am sure they can find someone on say Atlantis of the opposit sex. (darn why can't I be on Atlantis) LOL
Or Jack and Daniel pairing...common. Who looks at them and sees more than a brother/brother relationship?
Now, trust me on this when I say...I have no problem with gays whatever but to take two straight people and make them gay just for the hell of it ...I am sorry you do not do that. But to each their own. :bear:

imho

Their is no justification for that kind of hatred just because some on prefers stories with same sex pairings or opposite sex pairings. But, really when you think about it, come on, Sam is just a character.

Of course it's not a legitimate reason to hate a character. The thing about slash, it's the pairing of two people who would never be together in any way, shape or form on the show...it's totally against canon. (I've always wondered, if slash is so popular, twisting characters to fit some bizarre fetish, have fan fic writers for "Will and Grace" made Will and Jack straight??????) But, for the purposes of slash, and because it goes so far against canon, 'hating' the characters that would 'hinder' such a 'relationship' is this group's way of dealing with reality. I personally believe that Sam Carter is hated so much because there really IS a spark between her and Jack, and it's on the show, it's in canon, and that totally throws slash into the 'you're absolutely wrong' category. I have read threads in forums where slash writers and their followers declare up and down that they are the closest to canon, because of the relationship between Jack and Daniel. (Interestingly, few of them have watched the movie, to see how that relationship started, and grew.) They will toss episode scene after episode scene out as 'proof'. Apparently in their world, two men aren't allowed to be good friends, concerned for one another, hug one another, without sharing a bed and swapping bodily fluids. I can't remember the episode right off of the top of my head, but there is a reference to Jack and Daniel as being close as brothers...which they are. Those who have seen the movie understand just how that relationship began...and continued to grow in the show.

Now, I believe in live and let live. There are those who like slash, like to write it, and they should be allowed to do so without being hassled about it. I personally find it absolutely ridiculous. The sad thing is, slash writers are usually the best when it comes to good storylines, grammar, spelling and punctuation.

Oh, that is so true!! (I always picture Jack and Daniel rolling their eyes and declaring long and loud "Not in a million years!")

Im gonna have to quote michael shanks when he saw a photoshoped pic of J/D kissing,

' What the hell is wrong with you people' ? :P

Of course you can't hate a character because some weirdo want's to pair two heterosexual males... ohh why would anyone wanna pair them? This is just really weird... i tell you weird

Yet if you ever hear Micheal Shanks talk about it, he embraces it. I'm not saying he necessarily loves the idea, but he doesn't tell his fans that they're nuts (except for when he questions the whole Thor/Daniel pairing cause he says it's like having sex with himself)

My best friend is a volunteer at the Creation conventions (she makes certain the actors are where they're supposed to be when they're supposed to be there)...actually what MS is doing is making fun of the entire idea. Personally, he hates it.

I think it says something about Michael Shanks though. I mean, instead of not answering the question, he gives the audience what they want, whether he agrees with it or not.

Oh, absolutely. My girlfriend says that all of the actors of the show respect the fans, but MS seems to have a very special feeling for them...maybe because he's aware what side his bread is buttered on? After all, the FANS were what brought him back to the show...the suits and writers never would have offered that chance to him. They were ticked because he called them on what they were doing...Stargate was based on the friendship between Jack and Daniel...and they had drifted way too far from the premise.

I think he makes the best of something that bugs him...how better to deal with it than to laugh at it?
