View Full Version : Is Michael Shanks too buff for the part?

Simple question, do you think Michael Shanks buffness (as in how big and muscular his arms are) is too much for the character of Daniel Jackson, a geeky archealogist? In the movie Jack did refer to Daniel as a geek.

I choose no because Daniel was not always so buff. If you go back to the first couple of episodes you will see he is kind of geeky looking. However after handing around military types for 8 years you would tend to pick up some of their habits such as working out. Hence you would eventualy become buff.

And they have built that into the storyline as well, by having a couple of shots of them working out together.
That's why I voted no. Well, that and I like him buff. Besides, who's to say there aren't any, cute and/or buff archaelogists out there?
I had a college professor who was an archaeologist. She went down to Mexico to do some work with some pyramids and she and her hubby drove her Harley down there. Although, not requiring buffness, definately not geeky.

Well I think he is. I wish his character was more like it was at the beginning personally, well, except for the being okay with taking a wife he barely knows part. :p

I voted no too. As Jack said up top, Daniel's changed as the military has become more of who he is.

Geek has nothing to do with body style, actually. I know a building full of 'geeks' (Expedia.com, where my son works) and most of those guys are built!
Considering that maintaining his physical fitness was part of the requirement for being on an SG team; most archeaologists are a bit 'buff' just by the nature of the work they do; and all that he's been through, a lot of the body work was done as a means of self protection, I think it's very fitting that he's 'buff'.
And he looks so good, too...

Ah, but then you don't know Daniel Jackson! He was never one to take things slowly! Nor did he ever feel the need to worry about what others thought. He was/is an independent thinker, a man of action and firm convictions. He fell in love with Sha're almost as soon as he set eyes on her! He chose to stay behind because he loved her.
(Of course, my hubby proposed on two weeks after we officially 'got together', after spending Columbus Day weekend together, he was in the Navy at the time, we were married in December. It will be 30 years this year!)

I just find it interesting that he is not sneezing at everything anymore. I don't know if any of you noticed that.
Yes, when most people think of an archeologist they think "nerd", but like most everyone has said, he has gone through a lot and the physical demands of being a part of SG-1 had to show up somewhere. My only problem is that it is his behavior that has changed. It is like Carter said at the beginning of Season 7 when they found him and he lost his memory "If you had one flaw it was that you wanted to help people so much that it tore you apart when you couldn't" Or something to that effect:huh1:. He does not seem like that Dr. Jackson anymore. Now it seems like he his becoming more military minded. Yes, he is as brilliant as ever, but he does not seem to care about people as much as he did. Maybe that change in mindset is going hand and hand with the physical change as well.
But that is just my 2 cents worth.

They dealt with the allergies by giving him the shots...that was brought up in the first season. I'm assuming that Ascension sort of dealt with the allergies...*grin*
Think about all that he's been through...he's ascended twice, and returned twice. He's not the same man who walked through the 'gate the first time, and it wouldn't be believable if he hadn't grown and changed. He still cares very much about people. He's just more realistic in his views...experience can be a very bitter teacher. I also think Jack has been a big influence on him, and maybe not in such a good way. It didn't help that the two seasons of the 'knock off SG-1' had him acting out of character most of the time. I wanted to call the writers and ask them if they had lost their collective memories, (and minds!) or if changing the characters was something they saw as a good thing. My best friend watched season 9 and 10, and she says that occasionally the 'real' Daniel Jackson came through. In all seriousness, I wish they would have just ended the show after the last episode of season 8...what they did was to so twist everything that from the first moment of episode one season 9, it wasn't even the same show!

I agree about ending it after season 8. I do like Cameron Mitchell and I did not dislike seasons 9 & 10 but you are right the show was not the same. The whole thing about stargate was fighting the Gould and they did that. They should have ended Season 8 with some massive colossal victory of the Jaffa (more than just Dakara) such as showing them actually rebelling and turning on the Gould (like in the movie when Daniel explained what the wall writing said about what happened on Earth). Then that should have been that.

No. I like that it's not the stereotype, just because hes a bit of a geek hes very weak. I mean he is in the top team of their nr.1 alien military team, hes gotta have some muscle...

I would also say no, He is pretty nerdy in the first few seasons, as mentioned above. we also have to remember that DDJ spent alot of time in the sarcoghagus in season 2. enough to change his hairdo and his personality temporarily. who knows what it could have done to his arms

He actually worked out, there was a mention of it being required to be on an SG team, although I can't remember what episode that was in. We see him work out in season 7, the episode is "Chimera".
