View Full Version : Atlantis could learn from this.

According to everything I've read, they are introducing Col. Mitchell as a character who met SG-1 after the big battle in Antarctica where he was seriously injured. He got to know SG-1 then and they all like him. They're hoping this will help audiences accept the new character as many don't want to see Jack leave.
Atlantis could learn from this. If they had created Dr. Weir's character as one the audience could just really like, the show might be doing even better than it is now. Just a thought. :weir

I don't think they neccessarily need to build Weir's character from people knowing her before. I do like that she came directly from the White House without other people knowing her well.
Gives for more storyline down the road. Allows them to build the character and let her tell her story to her fellow teammembers.
Problem is, they haven't done it. People (fans) don't relate to her character because they don't know much about her. I think the writers need to work on her character a bit more.
Remember, Jack and Daniel didn't see eye to eye for awhile either (when they first met).

Yes, but both Jack and Daniel were likable characters on their own. Weir isn't that likable, at least I don't think she is, I find her to be just plain annoying.
I actually liked the actress they had play her at the end of season 7 in "Lost City." I don't think they made the right choice in recasting.
I think it's hard to start any show off with a woman in command. So often they come across as female dogs. Kind of like how people think female cops are meaner than male cops. Women in command seem to have a rep for being comandos and are just harder to like. We don't always expect to see the soft side in male characters but we expect it in female characters. I think they need to soften Dr. Weir up a bit.
So far she's come across as someone I would not want to have to work under.

Women in positions that high think they have to prove something (and sometimes men expect them too) and so they go over the top.
I don't neccesarily find her annoying, however, I have no connection with the character. I happen to like the actress and have seen her in a few movies (mostly TV). But, I think if the writers work on the character a little bit more, I think people will be able to connect with the character.

I think all the characters in the show could use work. I feel they really did some good work on David Hewlett's character half-way through last season but the others could use some more work, Weir, Shep, Teyla.

I have to agree. The characters aren't ones that the audience can relate to very well. I mean I like the characters but the only character I can find myself relating to in any way is Beckett or even McKay.
You have a good point with the Weir thing but I suppose that they made her that way for a reason.

That's a good idea, but sometimes characters could be introduced in their own way which seems to show more of the character then just bits. I think that the main focus of the audience should be on character growth rather then introduction. Either way, you do have a point about Weir and Mitchell.
